Masonry Painters in Hull

Hull Decorators are masonry painters covering Hull city and its desirable western and northern suburbs.
- Rendered walls and facades
- Exposed brick painting and treatment
- Stone facades and garden walls
- Breathable and waterproof paint systems
- Biological growth treatment and masonry consolidation
Hessle’s riverside location and exposure to Humber estuary air accelerates the deterioration of unpainted or poorly maintained masonry on older stock. Brick terraces on Boothferry Road and Livingstone Road absorb wind-driven moisture. Masonry paint applied without a consolidating primer fails by flaking rather than wearing gradually.
After hundreds of completed projects across Hull’s Victorian terraces and western suburbs, we know how these surfaces fail and how to stop them.

Masonry Painting Services in Hull
Rendered Walls
Rendered facades on Anlaby and Cottingham semis carry hairline cracks from Humber estuary moisture cycling. Before any coating, these cracks are filled with flexible exterior filler and the render condition is checked for hollow or poorly bonded sections.
We hack back loose render, make good hollow areas, and apply a masonry consolidating primer before the finish coat. For the full exterior wall programme, see our exterior painting page.
Exposed Brick
Brick houses in Hessle and Newland absorb moisture directly. Painting brick requires a breathable masonry paint that allows the wall to cycle moisture without trapping it behind the coating.
We specify breathable masonry paint on all exposed brick work. A consolidating masonry primer fills the porous surface and gives the finish coat a uniform base to adhere to.
Stone Facades
Stone facades on older Hull properties are rarer but require the same breathable system as brick. Natural stone is moisture-active and needs a coating that does not seal the surface.
Film-forming products are not appropriate for most stone surfaces. We advise on the appropriate product at the site visit.

Breathable Systems and Biological Treatment

Breathable and Waterproof Systems
The choice between a breathable masonry paint and a waterproof surface coating depends on the wall construction and the moisture source. A breathable system suits older brick and stone walls. A waterproof system suits rendered facades facing driven rain.
We assess each elevation individually and specify the correct system. Using a waterproof film on a wall with condensation or rising moisture causes moisture to accumulate behind the coating and push it off.
Biological Growth Treatment
Moss, algae, and lichen on masonry walls in Hull’s wet climate need treatment before any coating. Painting over biological growth seals it in and accelerates the failure of the new coat.
We treat biological growth with a fungicidal wash, allow adequate dwell time, and rinse before preparing the surface. For wood painting on timber elements alongside the masonry, we include this in the same exterior programme.
Here’s How It Works
1. Masonry Assessment
We assess the surface type, render condition, and any cracking, hollow sections, or biological growth. We identify the moisture source and specify the correct paint system before quoting.
2. Biological Growth Treatment
Moss, algae, and lichen are treated with a fungicidal wash. We allow adequate dwell time before rinsing. The surface is left to dry fully before preparation.
3. Crack Filling and Consolidation
Hairline cracks in render are filled with flexible exterior filler. Hollow render is hacked back and made good. A masonry consolidating primer is applied to stabilise the surface.
4. Priming
The correct masonry primer for the surface type and moisture conditions is applied. This is the foundation of the finish coat adhesion. No shortcuts at this stage.
5. Finish Coats
Two coats of masonry paint are applied with full drying time between. Westerly-facing elevations in Anlaby and Hessle are given additional attention at the preparation and application stages.

Masonry Painting Costs in Hull
Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01482 260223 for a precise quote.
Surface Condition
Rendered facades with significant cracking or hollow sections require more preparation than smooth, sound render. Brick with significant biological growth needs more pre-treatment time.
Trade insight: Hessle brick terraces on Boothferry Road and Livingstone Road are particularly prone to masonry paint failure without consolidating primer. We never skip this step.
Elevation Exposure
Westerly-facing elevations in Anlaby, Cottingham, and Hessle face greater wind-driven moisture than east-facing walls. These elevations need more preparation and may need three coats.
Property Size
Wall area is the primary pricing variable. A three-bedroom semi has considerably less wall area than a four-bedroom detached. We measure accurately before quoting.
Typical ranges: front elevation treatment (Hessle brick terrace) £900–£1,500; rendered semi (Anlaby) £1,400–£2,400; full house masonry programme (Cottingham or Kirk Ella) £2,500–£4,500+.
